Cannot believe I am seeing people getting their tits bent out of joint about a man taking his daughter into a women’s room. That shit was like, completely normal when I was a kid. We really have taken a flying leap backwards as a society into the Cootie Zone

“Men don’t belong in the women’s room” is in fact a subordinate social imperative to “children should be kept an eye on so they don’t get hurt” and especially when you’re talking about a toddler, most men’s rooms don’t have changing stations or suchlike. Morons

It should really not go without comment that afaik this is a black man taking care of his daughter, racism is a factor in people making a big stink about this and I’m not really gonna let the ~daughters of the witches you couldn’t burn~ forget that their actual grandmothers probably got pissy about integrated washrooms

“unions drowned out the voice of the individual 🥺” I can promise you employers were not listening to the voice of the individual to begin with

individualist ideals are a plague, in direct opposition to the labor movement. you are stronger together than apart. hate to tell you this but your coworkers are humans as well. organize

you’re all joking about not wearing earplugs to concerts, right? we’re not out here rawdogging 120dB. right.

to be clear i’m not trying to be moralizing or anything it’s just important to me that people at least know they should be protecting their ears at concerts and clubs. repeated exposure to loud enough music will lead to hearing loss. you will get tinnitus. you don’t want tinnitus.

I understand tinnitus can sound really vague and inconsequential to someone who hasn’t experienced it, I really get where everyone making jokes about it in the notes is coming from. that said:

  • tinnitus can be extremely debilitating. mine still sometimes keeps me awake for hours at night, despite having gotten better over the years. it can make it difficult to concentrate on anything else.
  • the more you are exposed to loud sounds, the higher the chance of getting tinnitus, and the worse it will get. even if you already have it, or already have hearing loss, you should be wearing protection in places like concerts and clubs.
  • you can have both hearing loss and tinnitus.
  • there are many ways to find relief for tinnitus, and it may fade on its own, especially if you take care of your ears, but there is no known cure.

If you’ve never had it, I really recommend looking up videos of what tinnitus sounds like, and just imagine that, always. or go through the tags and read through what people have said about their tinnitus. wear earplugs!!!

Over the shows and festivals I’ve been to in the last few years I’ve seen a growing number of people using AirPods or similar headphones as a substitute to proper noise cancelling ear protection and here’s why that’s a bad idea:

While AirPods have a feature called “active noise cancellation”, they do this by blasting your ears with white noise at the same volume as the surrounding sound to block it out. They’re not actually protecting your ears, just filtering out background noise.

You want to use earplugs that actually have a decibel reduction rating advertised on the box, preferably at least 20dB-32dB. I prefer the ones specifically for music events because they don’t compromise so much on sound quality, and they work out more cost-effective than disposable ones if you’re planning on going to a lot of shows or clubs or events with loud noise.

Even the cheapest disposable foam earplugs are better than nothing but if you can afford it I’d recommend you go for earplugs with 32dB or more noise reduction. (I use Loop’s “experience” ones but there are a couple of brands that cater to different budgets, you can usually find decent reusable ones for between £11 and £30)

Most venues will also be able to provide disposable earplugs if you don’t have any or forget them - this isn’t guaranteed though so it’s wise to bring your own if you can.

One of my favorite dutch sayings is actually “Alles kan kapot” which translates “Everything can break” and is usually used when you wanna cheer up your friend who has fallen for someone who’s already in a relationship

Yes, I am a straight man. Yes, getting the shit beat out of me in an all-male mosh pit is an erotic experience for me. We exist

When I was in Norway at the Gojira show a guy in the pit grabbed me & said “open your mouth”

And I did

He suspected (correctly) that I was dehydrated & was judging by the color of my tongue

But I fully heard “open your mouth” & thought “wow this stranger is going to spit in my mouth”

And then, naturally, I thought “well let’s see where he’s going with this”

we are in a media literacy crisis

friendly reminder that characters don’t need to be saints to be entertaining. and telling a story does not mean endorsement. art does not need to be all about morally good people.

IDK if this was meant as hyperbole but it’s literally true:

Adult literacy is low.

Child literacy is low.

Information literacy has shifted dramatically in the last decade, but reputable information sources like research journals and factual news reporting have been unable to keep pace.

We are genuinely in a crisis of media literacy, with ever fewer genuinely factual resources available in the style and language used by contemporary audiences.

It may sound condescending, but we genuinely need to remind people, or worse, explain to them for the first time that art is not evidence of real world behaviour.

So, thank you, for this reminder. Genuinely.

You’re correct:

Art does not need to feature exclusively morally pure characters. Art is not proof of the creator’s secret, violent desires.
